Debate by Council much appreciated with regard to the future of the Museum of Fire. In my opinion, it is important to save the Victorian fire station element of the current building as an integral part of the museum. It is irreplaceable architectural history, and alternative accommodation would never have the same atmosphere. For example, there is a pole leading from the chief officer’s flat above the engines to the operational floor. It is contained in a tiled, circular cupboard. Just wonderful!
There has been no weekend opening for the public, except on Doors Open Day, and this, combined with the lack of a sign outside, has held back visitor figures as the public are largely unaware of its existence. It is an amazing historical experience guided by ex fire-fighters, and an invaluable educational resource in terms of fire safety education.
